II. Wakkerstroom
Directly to the east of Potchefstroom lies an area of short-grass “prairie” and rock outcroppings that, while similar in appearance to the Potchefstroom area, is home to many unique species found nowhere else in the country. The ponderous notes of the Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird, begin the movement, but the tempo is quickly picked up by the winnowing of the African Snipe and the melodic lines of the endemic Bush Blackcap. The plaintive cries of the Red-winged Francolin are a recurring theme, as well as the staccato notes of the Ground Woodpecker. The movement ends with the motif of the Orange-throated Longclaw.
