                      South African Suite

V.  Drakensburg

The foothills around the little mountain nation of Lesotho, along with the high mountains themselves, present even more unique avian representatives.  The movement has a laid-back, almost easy-going feel to it, as the plaintive notes of the Crowned Crane provide a lazy melody alongside the triplets provided by the Cape Batis.  A major recurring theme in this movement is the repetitive song of the widespread Red-eyed Dove, and the melodies of the Laughing Dove, Cape Rock Thrush, and the endemic Gurney’s Sugarbird also provide solos.  The movement ends with the decisive notes of the area’s prettiest endemic, the Orange-breasted Rockjumper.

*A Note About MIDI Files:  Unfortunately, due to the fact that gradual tempo changes had to be entered manually in the original files, other playback effects (such as crescendos and sustain pedals) were not able to be reproduced in the MIDI version.
